It was a small gathering this time. Magesh spoke about his recent experience trying to disable typographic ligatures on Xubuntu Gautham spoke about his experience with Lubuntu and how it consumed less resources and made it possible to use his old hardware Magesh addressed a question from the audience (from a IIT EEE faculty, I don’t remember his name, sorry) about VirtualBox and how it’s able to provide a way to transfer operating system between different hardware configurations.

Meeting Minutes December 2017

We had our last meet of the year 2017 on december 9, 2017 at IIT Madras. Magesh started the show with his experiences on emacs. He explored the key bindings, buffers and usage of emacs. Explained on Emacs plugin system https://melpa.org and emacs bundles http://spacemacs.org/ Then, Shakthi Kannan explored the NoSQL database Aerospike. It is useful for faster access and can span upto 128 nodes. Unlike having a master node, which communicates to other nodes, it sends info about all the nodes to the clients.

Meeting Minutes November 2017

VIM - Edit at the speed of thought Sarath Srinivas gave an introduction to Vim. Vim is a powerful modal text editor based on vi. He explained the various key commands used for navigation and editing. He explained the concepts of verbs, modifiers and text objects in vim and demonstrated how they can be used to perform edits quickly. He suggested a command-line tool called Vimtutor. Vimtutor is an interactive tutorial that teaches new users the basics of Vim.

Meeting Minutes August 2017

Introduction to Emacs Lisp Shakthi Kannan gave a brief explanation about the Emacs Lisp using the GNU Emacs editor. He clearly explained about the basic syntax, usage and examples for Emacs Lisp. This was a great hands-on exercises about the Emacs Lisp. Emacs has a complete build in documentation. It will be helpful for the new users.
